LOVE DOLLS , I DOOO
So. Pasadena , CA - Moonlights as yoga teacher by night, plays with dolls by day. No, we're not talking about your creepy neighbor down the street, but Dooodolls creator Darren Chen. In 2006, the then graphic designer decided to try to make something out of his pastimes of doodling characters, collecting figurines, and penchant for Astro Boy - a Japanese cartoon character.
Darren embarked on making 3D characters out of his sketches, stitching together cloth cut-outs of the shapes he sketched. Evidently, he had some skill with a needle and thread, as his blanket-stitched creations, initially given away as presents, started to gain a following among family and friends. The precursors to the current Dooodolls clan had been created.
After two years, the Dooodolls series encompasses a line of 12” plush toys as well as the delightful 3” miniatures, which are hooked onto a keychain so they can go anywhere with their owners. Truth be told, the only thing practical to do with a Dooodoll is to cuddle it and love it. Choose to lavish your affections on hypnotically adorable Blinky, carefree BlurBlur, love spreader Cupido, misunderstood Charco, fish-lover Beary Fishy, exploring adventurer Pinky Pirate, irritable Orange Butch, talkative Coco Man, ingenious inventor Mr. Nerdie, competitive Numero, lighting-fast Ninja or green-thumbed Missy Micey.
While Darren confesses to being attracted to the ‘cute' type of characters, the Dooodolls aren't cute in a conventional way. At first look they appear to be a confounding mishmash of colors, anatomical parts and accessories, yet each character possesses a very distinct individual personalities. Darren admits to be very much influenced by pop culture and the diversity which permeates early every corner of the world today, which might be the reason why it is so easy to recognize a part of yourself in a Dooodoll, be it a physical trait or a character quirk.
Each Dooodoll today is still hand stitched to perfection so that no two are ever the same. The dolls are exceptional design targeted at the mass market, and priced very affordably under $25. Down the pipeline are plans to expand the line to include more characters as well as lifestyle products, which Darren hopes will enable the brand to grow together with the people who love it.
Design and Craftmanship
iEach Dooodoll is lovingly hand stitched, ‘created equal, but never the same'. From the minimalistic lines of Orange Butch to the literally starry eyes of Blinky, the minor discrepancies and imperfections are a constant mirror to our idiosyncrasies, and hey if a Dooodoll can get away with being imperfect and still be totally lovable, surely there's hope for us owners!
There is a Dooodoll character for every personality. Pinkie Pirate, the swashbuckling voyager, could be the shy mousy girl who one day took on the world. Orange butch just begs you to think of the grouchy English professor you had in college whose bark was worse than his bite. And it's safe to say that you can find a Mr. Nerdie look alike in every workplace!
Each of the 12 Dooodolls is also representative of a star sign. “I wanted to give each character something that different people would identify with…and make each character important but in their own unique way, so that no one character would feel left out” creator Darren explains, sounding more like a concerned parent than a toy designer. “Numero, he's a Scorpio to the core – constant overachiever, always a perfectionist. And Cupido is just too soft hearted and too much of a romantic sometimes, but he's a Pisces and that's just the way he is.”
Darren initially envisioned the Dooodolls as stuffed 2D creations – the design sketches were cut out of felt and blanket stitched together, creating a two and a half dimension doll. With today's Dooodolls there is a lot more attention being paid to the additional ‘half dimension' – textures on anatomical parts, and Beary Fishy's little pot belly for instance, make these dolls even more endearing. The blanket stitch detail still remains a constant theme throughout the different characters, being the common trait shared by the entire family.

DOOODOLLS FEATURED ON ESPN's PARDON THE INTERURRTION (PTI)
So. Pasadena , CA - Thanks to Bonnie Berko, an independent director at ESPN, who took a fancy to the dolls at the International Toy Fair 2007, the Dooodolls have found their way onto the set of Pardon the Interruption (also known as PTI ), a popular sports television show on ESPN, and airing on various ESPN TV channels, XM and Sirius satellite radio services and ESPN360.com. The show is also known for its set, featuring a "wall" full of cut-out heads of athletes and celebrities, bobblehead dolls, toys and trinkets.
PTI airs weekdays at 5:30 PM ET and is repeated at 6:30 PM ET on ESPNEWS and ESPN360.com
The dolls will be part of the set indefinitely. We are very excited about this as it is giving the Dooodolls widespread exposure, and exposing them to an immensely broader audience.

Unique Appeal of Dooodolls
